Notes

Production and nonsupervisory workers. Real dollars use July 2026 CPI-U (333.918).

  • Hourly earnings 1989–2026. BLS Current Employment Statistics, Average Hourly Earnings of Production and Nonsupervisory Employees, Total Private (FRED AHETPI). Seasonally adjusted monthly observations, averaged by calendar year.
  • Who is counted. Production and nonsupervisory workers are about four in five private jobs. The broader “all employees” earnings series only begins in 2006, so it is not used here.
  • 2026 year-to-date. Mean of January–July 2026 monthly observations ($32.20). July 2026 printed $32.40.
  • Inflation adjustment. Each year’s nominal average is multiplied by 333.918 / that year’s CPI-U (BLS CPIAUCNS). 333.918 is July 2026. The 2020 real jump is partly composition — low-wage jobs disappeared in the shutdown.
